Haematology
Haematology is the study of various components of blood for the diagnosis of disease and monitoring of treatment. Tests performed include those which quantitate the number, size and morphology of the different types of blood cells, determine blood group types, assess the coagulation ability of the blood and detect the presence of different types of blood parasites. The quantitation of red cells and their characteristics such as haemoglobin content is vital for the diagnosis of diseases such as the many types of anaemia and polycythaemia.
Microbiology
Microbiology plays an important role in the diagnosis of various infections by microscopic analysis and culture whereby bacteria and fungi are grown and identified on nutritious substances known as culture media. The antibiotics appropriate for the treatment of an infection by the cultured bacteria are then identified by further culture techniques. This allows for only the antibiotics appropriate to eradicate a particular infection to be prescribed for the patient thereby minimising the risk of anti-microbial resistant bacteria developing. Serology
Serology plays a vital role in the diagnosis of infections by the detection of antibodies against various bacteria, viruses and parasites in the body fluids such as blood, urine and cerebrospinal fluid. In addition, other conditions such as pregnancy, drug abuse and diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis as well as systemic lupus erythematosus are also diagnosed through the detection of particular proteins using antibody-antigen reaction technology.
